I know the usual content you find on this blog is about brain tumors and research. Sometimes I like to post about people. Specifically people who have overcome brain tumors. This week I would like to talk about one person, Heather Knies.
Heather was given a death sentence. Diagnosed six years ago with not just one but TWO brain tumors, one being a grade 4 glioblastoma, Heather is now cancer free. Her doctors at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona are speechless. They cannot explain it.

It is well known that grade 4 glioblastomas are malignant and very fatal. For Heather to survive this on top of another tumor, as well as become a mother (which is difficult because chemotherapy and radiation can leave patients infertile) is truly outstanding.
In an interview on abc, Heather explains the power of thought and the mind. She said

"The mind is so much more powerful than anyone can imagine," she said. "People believe that when they get cancer, it will kill them. But I never once thought that."
Her symptoms began in 2005 when she was driving home from work. Heather said she didn't even know what the white lines in the road were anymore. She was 24 and having visual problems.
Symptoms like this are common for a brain tumor patient. Heather found out after an MRI that a small tumor was pressing on her visual reception cord. Less than a year later the tumor began to grow. It was soon found out that the tumor was not only pressing on her visual reception cord but also on her temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes.
Heather Knies had a strong head through her time with cancer. She never once believed that her tumors would be the death of her; she was immediately defiant. The mind is an extremely powerful organ. She believed in herself enough, and look where is is. Alive and healthy, with a beautiful daughter. She can teach us something, always believe and never give up.
