Treatment for Drug-Resistant Brain Tumor Cells

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison describe why the glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is resistant to chemotherapy and provide a way to treat it.

The study is led by Dr. John Kuo, the assistant professor of neurological surgery and human oncology. The doctor reported "success for a combination therapy that knocks out signaling of multiple members of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family in brain-cancer cells" (Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure).
Years ago, researchers announced that there was a drug engineered to target EGFR (
epidermal growth factor receptor). They stated that it could work against GBM because most brain tumors carry the EGFR mutation. "Excessive and abnormal EGFR signaling spurs the growth of cancer cells. Although cetuximab, a monoclonal-antibody drug, was successful in clinical trials for patients with lung, colorectal, and head and neck cancers, it failed against GBM" (Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure).
