In the past week I have been contacted by two people who have encouraged me to write about the Mesothelioma Group to my readers. I took some time to look over their website and found it was very similar to how Get Through it Together is set up. They tell you what mesothelioma is, how to understand cancer, and the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, coping process, and finding a doctor.
Much like this website, they also offer scholarships, which have been linked to on the scholarships page here. They offer help for not only mesothelioma cancer patients but to patients with different kinds of cancer and also military veterans' families.

What is mesothelioma? This type of cancer is very aggressive and forms in protective lining that encases your body's organs and cavities. The cause for mesothelioma is mostly inhalation or digestion of asbestos. The most common place for it to develop are the lungs and the abdomen. According the the Mesothelioma Group, there are four types that develop in four specific areas:
People with this cancer are diagnosed at a time when it is very far along, due to it being fast growing. Also, the survival rate is about one year, with the five year survival rate at ten percent. It is noted that this rate is slowly climbing though.

The treatment for mesothelioma is fairly common: chemotherapy, radiation, and if the cancer is caught early on surgical resection is a possibility. For specific types of mesothelioma, such as pleura mesothelioma, there is a possibility that a lung will have to be removed.
The mission of the Mesothelioma Group is to provide an online education source for this type of cancer. They want to raise awareness for mesothelioma and help the patient or reader through the physical, emotional, and financial burdens you might face.
You could be wondering why I am writing about a group that does not associate with brain tumors. Get Through it Together is a support group for every type of cancer, with a focus on brain tumors for the time being. I feel that every group or organization that is trying to help cancer patients should be brought to light. Ever since my sister was diagnosed with a rhabdomyosarcoma I have realized that I cannot be focused on just one group. Everyone is going to need a little bit of help and I would like to offer that.
I encourage you to visit the Mesothelioma Group's website, it is very informational and educational. If you know someone who has the risk of getting this cancer, which could include contractors, firefighters, teachers, realtors, and veterans, please check the website out.
Thank you to Brandon and Elizabeth for informing me about this website. You can find out more about the website and the scholarships they offer on my resources and scholarships pages.
- The pleura, which covers the chest wall, outer lining of the lungs, and adjoining structures (blood vessels, nerves, and bronchi).
- The peritoneum, a membrane covering the lining of the abdominal cavity.
- The pericardium, which is a double-walled sac containing the heart and the roots of the great vessels.
- And the tunica vaginalis, a membrane covering the testis.
