You're probably thinking the same thing I thought: "What?!" How does that even make sense? Well I didn't know either until I read this very informative, give-you-a-bad-image-in-your-head article on a molecule called lucanthone.

It seems everything we have nowadays uses a laser. From hair removal to teeth whitening, laser beams are everywhere. Well we can add one more thing to that list. There is a laser called the femtosecond laser that is used to detect cancer and destroy cancer cells. It is said that brain tumor patients will be great for this treatment.
When diagnosed with a brain tumor there is only so much you can do. You have your different types of treatment, but you also have vaccines.
These vaccines do not work like flu vaccines. They do not prevent you from having a brain tumor. But they do help target the cancer cells and use your own body cells to attack the cancer cells. For the past four and a half years, I have spend almost every Friday volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Orange County. If I were to estimate how many hours put together I have volunteered, I would say over 600--maybe more.
This organization is very close to my heart. My dad went to the Ronald McDonald Houses in Boston and Alabama with only $20 in his pocket, and they let him stay there for $5 a night. He compensated for the lack of money by helping clean around the house. The Ronald McDonald House has been nothing but a blessing for my family. I like to find good news for my readers. It offers hope during this tough time. So to continue the great news I have been posting, here is one more on a new prognosis technique.
An MR spectroscopic imagining technique is said to be able to predict the prognosis and treatment responses for low-grade gliomas. You better believe it. This article started out with a surprise:
"A PET imaging protocol using an amino acid analog radiotracer in patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas identified responses to treatment with bevacizumab as early as 2 weeks after starting therapy in a prospective study." (Evans) A radiation oncologists oversees the care of patients who are receiving radiation treatment for cancer.
This article Medicare to Cut Payment for Cancer Radiotherapies describes the cuts on radiation oncologists are going to have to their payments. A new trial is showing that patients diagnosed with an anaplastic oligodendroglial tumor are living longer lives with a certain type of chemotherapy. This type of chemotherapy is called PCV chemotherapy, and needs to be added to standard radiation therapy in order for it to work.
There is a immunotherapy vaccine that uses peptitdes. Normally used on adults for gliomas. Now, there is a trial going on to use that vaccine for children with brain stem gliomas, cerebral high-grade gliomas, or recurrent gliomas.
According to the trials, the children tolerated the immunotherapy well. The trials are led by Dr. Ian Pollack, from the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Brain Care Institute. The National Brain Tumor Society has been extremely helpful to me regarding this website. They have allowed me to utilize their list of brain tumors by putting it on my website. For that, I am extremely grateful. Now, I would like to promote something that the National Brain Tumor Society is doing.
On September 8, they are holding a Brain Tumor Walk at the Angel's Stadium in Anaheim, CA. If you are local to this location, I really recommend joining them on this walk. |
